The Anatomy of Yoga

– a 2-part workshop on the key muscles groups of asana with Michael Stein

Key muscles of the body – Part I

In this three hour experiential workshop we will focus on the postural muscles deep within the core as well as the legs, hips, and the skeleton itself. We will explore what good alignment looks like, both on and off the mat, and how toning certain muscle groups will help us with any physical activity we engage in. We will also feel how specific sequences can both strengthen and lengthen the muscles simultaneously, thereby creating muscle tissue that stays healthy over a lifetime.

Key muscles of the body – Part 2

In this three hour workshop we will revisit some of the key muscles from our first workshop before expanding into the upper body. The focus will on the importance of the Core powerhouse and how to properly tap into its strength. We will also take a deep dive into the shoulder girdle and all of its many components. Since the shoulders are both very flexible and unstable, learning how to properly strengthen the muscles of the rotator cuff and the surrounding muscle tissue is very important to both prevent injury and add options to our existing practice.
