Introduction to Ashtanga Yoga

5-week Series

With Jacquelyn Nash

Thursdays, Jan. 18th-Feb. 15th, 2018

7:30-8:30pm at the Midtown Studio

$50; includes the 5 week series and 1 of our weekly Led Ashtanga classes

This 5-week series is for any and all practitioners, both experienced and beginners, who are curious about the Ashtanga Yoga system and incorporating the practice into their yoga routine. This course is meant to answer any questions and to help practitioners understand the integrity and the importance of this practice in a nourishing and compassionate way. Students will be introduced to the basic philosophy and principles of Ashtanga yoga and most specifically to the Primary Series of the Ashtanga practice, which is offered at The Yoga House three times a week. This series is designed for those new to the Ashtanga practice to help them learn and experience the basics of Ashtanga yoga in a safe and comfortable environment. Elements of breath, bandhas (internal energy locks), drishti (gazing points), Surya Namaskara (sun salutations) and vinyasa (linking breath and movement) will be the emphasis in this class. Each new lesson will build on what was learned the previous week so that all students will feel comfortable to step into their first Led Primary Series class. No experience is required. This class is open to both complete beginners and those with yoga experience.

Read a complete description of the Ashtanga Yoga practice here.

Jacquelyn Nash was first introduced to the Ashtanga Yoga system in her 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training with Michael Stein at Ashtanga Yoga in New Paltz, NY. Through the guidance of Michael and the self-study of David Swenson’s Ashtanga Yoga, The Practice Manual, Jacquelyn began a dedicated Ashtanga home practice, finding value in the authenticity and integrity of the practice. Through the years, Jacquelyn has been fortunate to study the Ashtanga Yoga system with renowned teachers John Campbell and Kino MacGregor, has taken classes with lineage holder Sharath Jois, Pattabhi Jois’s grandson, and has completed an Ashtanga Primary Series Teacher Training with David Swenson and Shelley Washington. Inspired by the light-heartedness but also sincerity of David and Shelley’s teachings, Jacquelyn has a nurturing and compassionate approach to the Ashtanga system that brings a sense accessibility to those practicing with her. She is humbled to be able to share this sacred practice.

with Kathy Reisfeld

Tuesdays, 5:45-7:15pm at the Uptown Studio

Begins November 7th

The physical and spiritual benefits of the Ashtanga Yoga practice unfold with a committed and regular practice, so we thought it was time to offer an additional class to the regular weekly offerings. This new class, which will also be a Primary Series class, will be led by experience Ashtanga yoga practitioner and instructor, Kathy Reisfeld, and hosted at our Uptown studio at 57 Crown Street.

Those who are newer to the Ashtanga Yoga practice, please feel free to come to any of our now three(!) Ashtanga classes, but know that we will be offering another Intro to Asthanga Yoga Series in January. If you’re interested in finding out a little more about what the practice is, please read our blog post here.

Kathy Reisfeld has been practicing Ashtanga Yoga since the fall of 2001 when she was introduced to the Ashtanga primary series. In the summer of 2003 she had the privilege of studying with Nancy Gilgoff and Christine Hoar at a workshop in Burlington, Vermont, which opened her eyes to the true depths of Ashtanga Yoga.

While living in NYC she practiced at Ashtanga Yoga New York with Eddie Stern as her teacher from 2005 through 2010.   She had the good fortune of meeting and practicing with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in the fall of 2003 and again in 2005 and 2006.  She traveled to Mysore, India in 2005 in order to study at the Ashanga Yoga Research Institute with Sharath Rangaswamy.

In 2010, while pregnant with her daughter, Ruthie, Kathy moved up to Woodstock with her husband, Scott. Kathy has been maintaining a home practice since her move up to Woodstock.   She is grateful for the love, support, and wisdom of her teacher, Christine Hoar. Kathy hosts a Mysore style Ashtanga practice group at her home studio in Woodstock. Visit Ashtanga Yoga Woodstock for more info.
