In our busy, over-stimulated lives, it’s not often enough that we give ourselves time to recharge our bodies in a restful, reflective way. The practice of Yin Yoga slows us down and though quietly passive, is deeply challenging on many levels. Designed to elongate the connective tissues (ligaments and fascia), postures are held for a long period of time with the depth of the pose being guided by attention, breath and patience.
The Restorative Yoga process is all about ‘un-doing’ which, for many of us, is easier said than done. This vital practice calms the nervous system and encourages the exploration of total relaxation. Often supported by blankets, bolsters and blocks, Restorative Yoga allows the body to be completely supported, involving little to no muscular effort, creating space for a completely receptive state of being.
Pursuing her love of dance, Bobbie, a graduate of Canada’s National Ballet School moved from her native Toronto to NY in 2005. Though the equation of Dancer to Yoga Teacher is a common one; it was a life-altering illness that tuned her in to the power of a daily, dedicated Yoga practice. Pretty soon, the practice became a way of life, with lessons learned on the mat melding with every day relationships and events.
A sweet, soulful teacher, Bobbie encourages students to discover ‘that which does not change’; a deep connection to our spirit that lies beneath external conditioning and habitual patterns. Her classes?….well, it depends what you’re coming for….Vinyasa classes are creative, challenging and fun. Drawing on her dance background, the sequencing is expressive and fluid while encouraging alignment (and a healthy use of props!) Bobbie’s yin/stretch/restorative classes are an invitation to pause, yield to the sense of support, turn inward and take the practice to a quiet, nourishing place; away from the external stress of our busy lives.
