RESTorative Yoga Workshop with Mel Toth – Saturday, December 9th – 2:30-5:30pm – $35 to preregister

RESTorative Yoga Workshop

with Mel Toth

A perfect yoga break in the midst of the holiday season….

Saturday, Dec. 9th, 2:30-5:30pm

at our Midtown Studio

$35 to prereg/$40 day-of

During RESTorative yoga, periods of deliberate stillness create a safe space to explore letting go. Often the greatest challenge of this practice is allowing that stillness. Acknowledging that reality, RESTorative first uses gentle movement to help release excess energy and physical tension. Props such as blankets, bolsters and blocks are then used to create a cradle of support into which the body can let go. While in supported poses, engaging the mind with conscious breath work and guided relaxation encourages deep physical and emotional release. Through discussion and practice, we will explore what RESTorative is, why it’s beneficial and how to incorporate supported postures into your home or teaching practice. Workshop includes a 90-minute RESTorative class. No experience necessary, just a desire to find greater ease in the body/mind.

After many years of sporadic practice, Mel recommitted to yoga after moving to Saugerties in 2011 and discovering Shakti Yoga’s sanctuary classes. Two years later, she completed Shakti’s 200 hour teacher training and has been teaching yoga to students of all ages ever since. An educator since 1998, Mel has taught 4th grade, co-authored a strategy book for teachers and served as a tutor and Director of Education for several NY learning centers. Mel’s varied educational experiences have taught her to remain flexible in the face of teaching and learning challenges and receptive to new ways of sharing and receiving information.
mel toth, yoga, kingston, nyHer classes focus on understanding the fundamentals of asana (poses) through the use of props (blocks, blankets, straps, chairs, bolsters) and movement exploration, while emphasizing the discovery of personal alignment, balance and relaxation. After many years of chronic injuries and pain related to scoliosis (curvature of the spine), Mel has found great relief through the practice of gentle and restorative poses and is passionate about incorporating both into her classes. By encouraging students to respect their physical limitations while exploring what’s possible, Mel aims to help each individual learn how to serve the unique needs of the body. She is forever grateful to her first yoga teacher, Jill Gnassi, whose expert Iyengar instruction taught her how attending to small details could make a huge difference in life.

Monthly Amma Satsang Now on First Sundays

Monthly Satsang

First Sundays at our Uptown Studio

Next one: Sunday, August 6th, 7pm

Amma is with a gathering of her children at a rest stop on tour and smiles sweetly at everyone.

Please join us for an Amma Satsang: An open chanting and meditation group in the tradition of Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi. Through chanting the 108 Names of the Divine Mother in Sanskrit we practice Bhakti Yoga, the yoga of devotion. Chanting also clears the mind for meditation. Whether you come and listen to our musicians or join us in chanting, please come to experience this ancient practice. Satsang means, “in the company of truth.” As we clear our minds and open our hearts, we can dwell in our essence.

  • Connective Tissue: the star of the show in this method and how is relates to the physical, mental/emotional and subtle bodies
  • how to set the ‘mood’ of the practice; evoking and maintaining the space of quiet, thoughtful attention

bobbie marchandBobbie Marchand, in pursuing her love of dance, moved from her native Toronto to NY in 2005. Though the transition of dancer to yoga teacher is a common one, it was an illness that tuned her in to the power of a daily, dedicated practice. Bobbie’s Vinyasa classes are creative, challenging and fun. Drawing on her dance background, the sequencing is expressive and fluid while encouraging alignment (and a healthy use of props!). Her yin/stretch/restorative classes are an invitation to pause, yield to the sense of support, turn inward and take the practice to a quiet, nourishing place away from the external stress of our busy lives. Endless gratitude to teachers Diana Lockett, Amanda Harding and Raghunath for their encouragement, support and loving guidance on this incredible journey.

Yin Yoga Workshop, Saturday, Mar. 11th 2:30-5pm

Exploring the Practice and Principles of Yin Yoga

with Bobbie Marchand

Saturday, Mar. 11th, 3:30-5:30pm

unnamedA quietly passive, though deeply challenging practice, yin yoga is designed to elongate the connective tissues of the body (ligaments, tendon and fascia) resulting in a greater sense of space within. For a therapeutic effect, poses are sustained for along period of time; practitioners are encouraged into the depth of the pose by the guidance and patient listening to their own breath.

This workshop will offer information about a full yin yoga practice; the principles behind Yin and Yang; the desired effect of a yin practice on our begin as a whole; connective tissue and it’s relevance to the practice of yin; how and when to incorporate yin principles into a traditional practice; and pranayama for a yin practice.
