Day 1: Saturday, September 8th, 1-4pm Open to students new to the Mysore method, including absolute beginners

On Day 1 we will explore the fundamentals of the Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series. The Primary Series is the first series we learn in the Ashtanga Yoga system, anyone new to Ashtanga Yoga begins here. We will approach the practice with the intention to start attending the early morning Mysore program. Discover ways to memorize the sequence, which is necessary if we are interested in practicing using the traditional Mysore method. Once you have completed Day 1 and Day 2 of this weekend, you will have the basic foundations needed to join in the early morning practice group which meets Monday, Wednesday, Friday anytime between 6:30-8:30am* (*you may arrive any time and are required to finish your practice by 8:30am).

On Day 1, learn:

  • a little about the background of this method, where it comes from and the benefits of practicing Mysore Style Ashtanga Yoga
  • the foundations for this practice Surya Namaskar A and B, the standing sequence and the closing sequence.
  • ways to learn and memorize the sequence.

Those attending Day 1 are welcome to attend the Sunday Led Primary Series class on 9/9 at no extra charge to participate or to just observe.

Day 2: Sunday, September 9th, 1-4pm Open to students who attended Day 1 and to those who have a current Mysore Style practice*. (*If you do not have a current Mysore practice, please attend Day 1)

On Day 2 we will dive deep in to the theory and practice of Mysore Style Ashtanga Yoga. Anyone who has been practicing Ashtanga Yoga or those who have attended Day 1 of the Mysore Style Ashtanga Exploration Weekend will benefit from this workshop. We will explore the principles that support this method of yoga practice in detail giving those who attend many tools to take with them into the Mysore room and can then apply in an individual way to their personal practice. This 3 hour workshop is packed full of information, bring a notebook and pen! You will have the opportunity to ask questions about the practice in general as well as personal questions related to your own practice.
On Day 2, learn the following:
  • Ashtanga Yoga follows the `Tristana` approach to yoga practice ~ Breath, Bandha/Posture, Drishti. We will learn the details of this method and find out why and how it leads to a state of dharana (concentration), dhyana (meditation) and ultimately samadhi (liberation/enlightenment). We will practice this method using various postures from the Ashtanga Primary Series in order to experience the breath, the bandhas and the drishti as it happens in your own practice.
  • When you attend a Mysore Style class you will primarily receive hands on adjustments with minimal verbal cues. We will learn about this approach, how to assess if a physical adjustment is safe for your body and how receive adjustments in a way that will ultimately benefit your practice.

If you’re interested in finding out a little more about what the practice is, please read our blog post here.

Kathy Reisfeld has been practicing Ashtanga Yoga since the fall of 2001 when she was introduced to the Ashtanga primary series. In the summer of 2003 she had the privilege of studying with Nancy Gilgoff and Christine Hoar at a workshop in Burlington, Vermont, which opened her eyes to the true depths of Ashtanga Yoga.

While living in NYC she practiced at Ashtanga Yoga New York with Eddie Stern as her teacher from 2005 through 2010.   She had the good fortune of meeting and practicing with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in the fall of 2003 and again in 2005 and 2006.  She traveled to Mysore, India in 2005 in order to study at the Ashanga Yoga Research Institute with Sharath Rangaswamy.

In 2010, while pregnant with her daughter, Ruthie, Kathy moved up to Woodstock with her husband, Scott. Kathy has been maintaining a home practice since her move up to Woodstock.   She is grateful for the love, support, and wisdom of her teacher, Christine Hoar. October Focus–Our Lineage

October Focus

The Ashtanga-Vinyasa Lineage

You have probably heard us quoting the likes of Iyengar, Yogananda and other yoga masters before or after class, and if you have been to the studio recently, you have seen a few new faces on the front wall. They are T.K.V. Krishnamacharya, Paramahansa Yogananda, B.K.S. Iyengar, and Pattabhi Jois. Although these are certainly not the only fore-figures of the yoga tradition (Hey! where are the women?), they are among the most authoritative practitioners and teachers of yoga as we now know it. This month, we shed light on the history of modern yoga, specifically our Ashtanga-Vinyasa heritage, by sharing from some of the major texts written by these and other influential yogi and yogini teachers. Here’s a brief snapshot:

T.K.V. Krishnamacharya (1888-1989), who came from a family of yoga philosophers, was a celebrated yoga scholar and Ayurvedic physician credited with the revival of Hatha Yoga‘s physical forms. He had a reputation for being a demanding teacher of ancient texts and yoga asana as methods of gaining “right knowledge” of the divine. He is called the “architect of vinyasa” and “the father of modern yoga” and was guru to many influential yogis, from Pattabhi Jois to Iyengar to Indra Devi.
Paramahansa Yogananda (1893-1952) heard his life’s calling — to experience oneness with the divine — quite early on in his life. His meditations took him from teacher to teacher until he found his guru, Swami Yukteswar, who advised him to take the teachings of yoga to the U.S., which he did in 1920, eventually opening the Self-Realization Fellowship in Los Angeles, California. He penned Autobiography of a Yogi, detailing his incredible and ofttimes mystical-magical journey toward union with the cosmic consciousness.
Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009) is said to have codified the system of Ashtanga Yoga asana, from the Primary Series to the Advanced Series, as it is still practiced today. According to Pattabhi Jois himself, the sequences he popularized were taken, nearly pose by pose, from the teachings of his longtime teacher Krishnamacharya. Chanting, breathing exercises, meditation, and intense study of philosophical texts were also a major component of Jois’ teachings.
New limbs and leaves are sprouting on yoga‘s ancestral tree every day. Thanks in part to these teachers, the practice is alive, well, and evolving as it unites practitioners around the globe in the aspiration to realize our connectedness. Look forward to sharing the journey together on our mats!In peace,

Leigha & Jacqui
